Dawn began her career in the NHS as a biomedical scientist, before moving into regulatory and commercial roles in the medical technology sector.

She now applies her experience to support organisations working with medical devices and in vitro diagnostics, alongside running her own consultancy.

What motivated you to pursue Chartered Scientist (CSci) status?

“My sister, Lorna Middleton, is a Specialist Biomedical Scientist working in transfusion science on the Isle of Man. Earlier this year, she helped me establish a new business.

Together, we developed the governance structure for this new venture, during which she encouraged me to pursue Chartered Scientist status, sharing the value it had brought to her own career.

When I reviewed the requirements, it was clear that the competencies aligned closely with my day-to-day responsibilities, as I have advised start-ups on regulatory pathways for IVDs and medical devices, ensuring compliance with the latest ISO standards and legislation. Already an IBMS Fellow, Chartered status was the natural next step.”

Would you recommend joining the IBMS to others seeking CSci status?

Having a professional body behind you is essential. For me, with an entrepreneurial focus, IBMS membership provides credibility and demonstrates my commitment to the high professional and ethical standards the IBMS represents.

Although I no longer work directly in the laboratory, my expertise is firmly grounded in laboratory practice and regulatory science, and IBMS membership reinforces that connection.

How has CSci status influenced your career trajectory, credibility, or opportunities in biomedical science?

“As a business owner, professional credibility is critical. Over the past 15 years, I have achieved a great deal, and CSci status provides external recognition of that work.

The competencies span a wide range of skills, all of which are integral to my role, so achieving this recognition validates the level at which I have consistently worked.

I believe CSci will strengthen my credibility and give me added confidence when engaging with clients and partners.”

Have you noticed unexpected benefits, such as networking opportunities or enhanced confidence in your expertise?

Yes. At networking events, sharing my CSci achievement has prompted positive recognition and respect.

It has reinforced my credibility and highlighted the value of working to a consistently high professional standard.

Can you walk us through your application process?

“I asked a Chartered colleague who knew my work to support my application. As I had many potential examples of work that I could use as evidence in my application, I found it helpful to discuss them with my sister. After carefully reviewing the competency framework, I selected the most relevant examples.

Working through the questions over two weeks became a valuable reflective process, highlighting both my achievements and areas for future development.”
