My Lab Guided Tours: Microbiology Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Laboratory Manager Deborah Karim gives a guided tour of the microbiology facilities at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The tour opens the doors to the laboratory and gives viewers a valuable glimpse of the work, tests and equipment that are central to the department. The laboratory consists of bacteriology, serology and molecular departments, with staff rotating throughout.

Following a merger of the Luton and Dunstable Hospital and Bedford Hospital during COVID, all microbiology services were transferred to Bedford and the department now processes over 500,000 tests a year.

The laboratory has seen many changes over recent years and has embraced all of them to emerge as a dynamic, adaptable, forward-looking service that values its staff as its greatest asset.

This lab tour was produced in collaboration with Beckman Coulter.
