Toby's Lab Tour at UHBW
Meeting the biomedical scientists at work can also make the hospital experience feel a little less unfamiliar, especially during long or difficult periods of care.
On 3rd December, paediatric haematology patient, Toby, visited the laboratory with his mum Nikki and sister Sophie for a Harvey’s Lab Tour. Toby is currently receiving treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer that affects the white blood cells.
The tour
During his tour, Toby spent time looking at different areas of the laboratory, including specimen reception, haematology, blood transfusion and special techniques. He liked seeing the equipment up close, learning more about how samples are processed, and seeing the role biomedical scientists play in supporting patient care.
The team loved Toby's curiosity throughout the visit, and it was a pleasure to welcome him into the lab and help him experience what it feels like to be a scientist for the day.
Feedback from Toby and his family
After the tour, Nikki gave some lovely feedback:
Thank you again to the whole team for having us. Everyone was so enthusiastic and patient. It was such a valuable experience. We all learnt something!
Toby also had this to say about his day in the lab:
I liked being a real scientist. It was fun using the machines and doing experiments. The microscope is much bigger than mine!
Thank you to everyone involved in making Toby’s tour possible, and for helping to create such a positive and memorable experience for Toby and his family.
