Deezul launches Harvey's Lab Tours at St Mary's Hospital

Young patient Deezul has become the first child to take part in a Harvey's Lab Tour at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, marking the launch of the programme at their hospital

The Blood Sciences team showed Deezul, along with his mum and auntie, to the laboratory for a special visit. Together, they got to see what happens to a blood sample after it's taken and meet the biomedical scientists and staff who look after it every step of the way.

Before the tour started, Deezul was given his own Harvey's Lab Tours lanyard, ID badge and, most importantly, a lab coat. Wearing the same protective clothing as the staff helps children feel more comfortable in an unfamiliar environment and ready to take part in the activities.

He followed the journey of a blood sample through the laboratory, from booking it into the computer system to seeing how it is analysed. Along the way, he had the chance to:

  • Try blood grouping
  • Look at a blood film under the microscope
  • Experiment with colour-changing reactions

Keegan Brown, Medical Laboratory Assistant in Blood Sciences at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:

It was a fantastic start to Harvey's Lab Tours in Blood Sciences. It was wonderful to show Deezul and his family the science behind diagnosis and the important work carried out by our laboratory teams every day. We hope these tours help make hospital experiences less daunting for children while inspiring curiosity about biomedical science. This is the start of something really exciting, and we look forward to welcoming many more young people in the future
