An annual event to celebrate the vital role of biomedical scientists and healthcare laboratory staff
Biomedical Science Day aims to raise public and professional awareness about the critical contributions of biomedical science in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases through laboratory testing and research.
The event involves activities like lab tours, interactive demonstrations, educational workshops, and social media campaigns using hashtags such as #BiomedicalScienceDay and #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare. It showcases the expertise of biomedical scientists, engages communities, and inspires future professionals.
Since it began in 2017, Biomedical Science Day has grown into the largest awareness campaign for our profession, with hundreds of events taking place across the UK and millions of people reached online.
Over the past decade, IBMS members have led the way with creative and engaging activities – from colourful displays and interactive demonstrations to laboratory tours and social media campaigns. Last year alone, more than 320 events were supported through our event packs and funding, reaching audiences across hospitals, schools and communities.

Make the 10th anniversary our biggest celebration yet
The 10th anniversary is the perfect opportunity to take part and showcase the profession. Whether you organise a large public event or a small activity within your laboratory, every contribution helps highlight the impact of biomedical science.
Here are some ideas to get started:
Bring your work to life
Invite colleagues, students or the public into your laboratory – or take your work to them. Lab tours, microscope sessions, simple experiments and interactive exhibits help people see how biomedical science supports diagnosis and patient care.
Connect with your community
Consider hosting a stall in a hospital entrance, community centre or school. Short talks, quizzes and demonstrations are great ways to spark curiosity and start conversations about biomedical science.
Shine online
Social media is a powerful way to amplify your message. Share photos, videos or “day in the life” stories using #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare and #BiomedicalScienceDay2026 to connect with colleagues and reach wider audiences.
Celebrate your team
Biomedical Science Day is also a chance to recognise the people behind the science. Highlight your team, share personal stories and celebrate the different disciplines that make up the profession.
Inspire the future
Use the day to engage with students and early-career scientists. School visits, workshops and career conversations can inspire the next generation to explore biomedical science.
And now award-winning
We’re proud to share that Biomedical Science Day has been named the winner of the Advancing Healthcare "Award for Campaigning with Power and Impact", supported by PH Affairs.
The national campaign was praised by judges for the campaign’s longstanding success, recognising its ability to empower members to tell their own stories in their own way – creating hundreds of local campaigns that open the door on a vital but often unseen profession. Last year alone saw over 300 labs take part, reaching 1.5 million people online.
The judges though that the longevity of this campaign… speaks to an unmet need, and stands out by supporting the whole of their membership to promote themselves in their own way – using hundreds of discrete local campaigns to open the door on hidden professions
We also want to thank everyone who has contributed to Biomedical Science Day since it began – whether by planning an event, designing a display, sharing stories online, or simply helping to spread the word. Your enthusiasm and dedication have powered this campaign and helped build something truly meaningful for the profession.
As we gear up to mark a decade of Biomedical Science Day in 2026, this award is a perfect milestone – celebrating not just a campaign, but a community working together to put biomedical science at the heart of healthcare.
