Chloe's Tour at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary

Back in September, the Blood Sciences team were introduced to Chloe and her mum, Tracy for a lab tour.

Health issues have made Chloe understandably anxious about hospital visits, especially when it comes to having her bloods taken. The team hoped that a behind the scenes look at the lab might help ease those fears, showing Chloe what happens to her samples and helping her feel more comfortable during future appointments.

The tour

To start things off, the team sent Chloe’s squidgy penguin toy on a holiday through the pneumatic tube system to the paediatric ward. He returned moments later with a lovely written message from the ward staff.

Next, Chloe learned to pipette like a pro, going on to create a sample inspired by her favourite show. The team called it ‘Demon blood’, and it turned a striking, iridescent purple that shimmered beautifully under the lab lights.

Partway through the visit, Chloe began to feel a little unwell, so the team made sure she could rest and decided she would come back another day to see the haematology and blood transfusion sections. They can’t wait to welcome her back once she’s feeling better.

Thankfully, Harvey Bear was on hand with plenty of cuddles to lift her spirits before she went home.

At Harvey’s Lab Tours, every visit is tailored to the child’s needs and wellbeing. The teams always take care to ensure young visitors are comfortable, supported, and can participate safely, even if that means rescheduling or adapting the tour to suit how they’re feeling on the day.
