New Lab Tests Online-UK website launches

A redeveloped Lab Tests Online UK (LTO) website launches today, helping patients better understand their laboratory test results and the role of pathology in their care.

Developed through a partnership between the Association for Laboratory Medicine (LabMed), the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath), the relaunched website reflects a shared commitment to improving patient understanding of laboratory testing and results.

Pathology testing underpins modern healthcare, informing around 70% of clinical decisions related to diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring, as well as screening for disease prevention. With approximately 2 billion tests carried out each year in the UK—equating to around 20 per person—accessible and reliable information is essential for patients navigating their results.

As more patients gain access to their health records through digital services such as the NHS App and GP online systems, and as care increasingly shifts into community settings, people are playing a more active role in managing their health. This makes clear, trustworthy explanations of test results more important than ever.

The relaunched Lab Tests Online UK website has been completely redesigned to meet this need. The updated platform features improved navigation, a cleaner layout, and enhanced accessibility, making it easier for patients and the public to find and understand information about laboratory tests. All content is written, reviewed, and regularly updated by experts in laboratory medicine, with robust peer review processes in place.

The redevelopment was shaped by patient research and a comprehensive content review led by the LTO Board, working in partnership with digital agency William Joseph. It also draws on insights from an NIHR-funded study by the Universities of Bristol and Manchester into how patients access and interpret their test results.

Dr Danielle Freedman, Chair of the Lab Tests Online UK Board, said:

As more people see their test results online, it’s vital they can access clear and reliable explanations. Lab Tests Online UK brings the expertise of laboratory medicine directly to patients and the public.

The redevelopment was made possible through collaboration between LabMed, IBMS and RCPath, who worked together to support the investment required to rebuild the site and ensure it meets the needs of patients and the public.

Supporting the platform’s ongoing development, IBMS Council Member Dr Alan Deacon was appointed as Editor of Lab Tests Online UK last year, overseeing content across the site to ensure it remains accurate, up-to-date, and accessible.

Dr Sarah Pitt, IBMS President, said:

This relaunch reflects the strength of collaboration across the laboratory medicine community. By working together, we can provide patients with clear, reliable information that helps them understand their test results and feel more confident in managing their health.

This partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to improving public understanding of laboratory medicine and ensuring patients have access to high-quality, trusted health information.
