IBMS Research Fund

Each year the IBMS will invite applications to bid for allocation of an additional £100,000 per annum funding on research around two themes. This year the themes are:

  • Opportunities and challenges in career progression as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Opportunities and challenges in becoming a consultant Biomedical Scientist
  • Implementation and evaluation of environmentally sustainable laboratory practice
  • Open Research (aligned to the IBMS Strategy)
Limits of funding

Applications are limited to UK based IBMS members.  Where a group of people are applying, the lead applicant must be an IBMS UK based member.

Examples of how this funding may and may not be used are outlined below. Please note that these examples are not exhaustive, please contact the IBMS via education@ibms.org with any queries regarding eligible and ineligible costs.

We WILL fund costs associated with:

We will NOT fund costs associated with:

  • Staff time for the development of outputs
  • Purchase of training materials or equipment to deliver the project
  • Consumables associated with equipment, provided those consumables are ONLY used in connection with staff-training
  • License fees and software subscriptions relevant to the project
  • Publication of outputs in peer-reviewed literature
  • Promotional literature related to the project
  •  Equipment or consumables for use in delivering normal laboratory service
  • Established training courses
  • External training courses for staff, unless they are directly related to delivering the project outputs

To apply for a research grant, please complete an IBMS Research Application Form and return by Friday 16 May to education@ibms.org

A sub-committee will review the applications and seek full Committee approval of their decisions as a piece of work undertaken online to enable the allocation of the awards in June 2025.

The IBMS Research Fund is separate to IBMS Research Grants which are awarded to UK based IBMS members to support original investigations and other suitable research work.
