The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency (SoPs) for biomedical scientists and clinical scientists have been updated and will be in use from 1st September 2023.

By setting threshold standards that are considered necessary to protect the public, the SoPs help to establish clear expectations of registrants’ knowledge and abilities when they start practising.

The updated standards for biomedical scientists include an increased emphasis on the promotion of public health and prevention of patients’ ill-health, the central role of the service-user, the role of equality, diversity and inclusion – and much more besides (read more).

These changes have been made following an extensive period of engagement with several stakeholders and will reflect the first revisions made to the standards since 2015.

Currently, the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio is in the process of being finalised, and will include an updated version of the HCPC SoPs for biomedical scientists. We are also working to revise the Certificate of Competence by Equivalence (Biomedical Scientists) and Certificate of Attainment for Clinical Scientists portfolios and guidance documents.

Mapping the updates to the Standards of Proficiency

In response to feedback from Training Officers, Training Managers, Placement Tutors and Apprenticeship Programme Leaders, we have produced a simple mapping document to show the sections and modules where each new Standard of Proficiency will be located in the updated IBMS Registration Training Portfolio.

This mapping document will allow colleagues to prepare by updating Training Plans in advance of September 2023. This work will be further supported by the release of the finalised documents, monthly IBMS Support Hubs and IBMS Training for Trainers events in the spring and summer.
