Gilbert and Livinia’s Lab Tour

Harvey's Lab Tours

The team at Medway Maritime Hospital Pathology Laboratory recently hosted a Harvey’s Lab Tour for Gilbert, his younger sister Livinia, and their mum.

Gilbert, who has Cystic Fibrosis, had previously found blood tests stressful after a difficult experience. To help rebuild his confidence, the lab arranged a special tour to show him exactly what happens to his samples behind the scenes.

After Gilbert had his Liver Function Test, Auntie Annie, who supports children as part of the COAST team, brought the whole family (and the sample) up to the lab.

The tour began with Gilbert booking in his sample alongside the Central Specimen Reception team. From there, he placed the sample onto the Biochemistry analysers with help from a friendly biochemist who explained the process in a clear and engaging way.

The tour continued with plenty of exciting stops: including a look at different analysers, colourful blood films, and discussions about blood components and the role they play in diagnosis. There were hands-on activities, curious questions, and lots of smiles!

At the end of the tour, Gilbert and Livinia received Harvey’s Lab Tours certificates and goody bags. The whole family had a wonderful time, and the team were delighted to be part of such a meaningful experience. Gilbert even left saying he wants to be a scientist one day!

Thank you to the pathology team at Medway Maritime Hospital for making this special visit possible, and for showing Gilbert and Livinia the great work happening behind the scenes.
