The Chowdhury Shaili Family's Tour at York Hospital
In April, the Chowdhury Shaili family visited the laboratories at York Hospital to learn more about what happens to their samples behind-the-scenes.
Thalassaemia runs in the Chowdhury family. This genetic blood disorder can affect the body’s ability to produce haemoglobin, often causing anaemia and requiring regular blood transfusions.
For siblings Tanhiyat and Isfar, who receive regular transfusions at York Hospital, the lab tour offered a unique opportunity to see what happens to their blood samples after they're taken. Understanding how their blood is analysed, cross-matched, and prepared for transfusion helped them feel more connected to their care and the people who support their treatment.
Tanhiyat and Isfar enjoyed their tour, describing it as both interesting and educational. Their mum shared:
“Today’s lab tour was truly a wonderful experience. Everyone was exceptionally welcoming and took the time to explain everything clearly and thoughtfully.”
Seeing the science behind their care not only helped demystify the process, but also gave the young patients an insight into the incredible work that supports their health every day.
A big thank you to Tina Ivel, Charli Trouth and Kat Johnson for making this visit possible and for showing just how much care and compassion goes into every sample.
