Biomedical Science Day 2025 Competition Winners
Announcing the #BiomedicalScienceDay2025 competition winners
This year’s Biomedical Science Day was an absolute showstopper, once again proving that our members don’t just excel in science… they’re also hilarious, creative, and thoughtful.
With entries flooding in from across the UK, it wasn’t easy choosing our winners. But after much deliberation, we’re proud to share the standout submissions for 2025’s #BiomedicalScienceDay competitions.
Thank you to everyone who entered. Your passion for biomedical science (and commitment to themed cakes) is unmatched.
Best biomedical bake (best cake)
Robert McClenaghan, from the Pathology Department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, NHS Grampian, cooked up a disturbingly brilliant cake that any histologist would appreciate (and possibly wince at). Featuring a dissected foot, cassettes, and a processing bath. It’s the stuff of pathology dreams. Or nightmares. Either way, we’re impressed.
Best display/stand
Andrew Ward and Natalie Lamont, University of Sunderland, pulled in the crowds with a bold, colourful stand. There were fun props, educational materials to take away, and even some sweet treats for good measure.
Best group photo with placard(s)
Best group photo with placard goes to the Microbiology Team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. They went all out, even printing tiny microbes to decorate their placards.
Best group workplace photo
The winning photo comes from Ellie Holt at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. This colourful, hand-crafted display is a celebration of heritage and solidarity. The East Kent team proudly waved 17 national flags that represent their diverse backgrounds, with many team members or their families having immigrated to the UK.
Best individual photo with placard
After a few failed attempts to get screen time (see below), Josh, Associate Practitioner at North Wales Microbiology, finally gets his moment in the limelight.
Best individual workplace photo
Captured mid-dissection of a fibroid, Sarah Wells, Northampton General Hospital, gives us a snapshot that’s not for the squeamish – but definitely for the scientists.
Best biomedical science “under the microscope” photo
A glowing entry (literally). Alyson submitted an Immunofluorescence image from her collagen IV control set, titled: “The Shining Heart of Health Care.”
Best biomedical science meme
We’ve all been there. The quiet guilt. The carefully avoided eye contact. Jenna Carey, Western General Hospital, NHS Lothian, nailed it with this year's winning meme.
Best biomedical science video
Ever wondered what a day in the life of a biomedical scientist looks like... soundtracked to a hip hop beat? Christine Egerton, Senior Biomedical Scientist at the Willink Biochemical Genetics Laboratory, Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine, brought rhythm and some serious lab skills in this winning video.
Honourable mention:
Amy MacDonald’s video from North Wales Microbiology, Public Health Wales, left us giggling, as poor Josh kept getting cut off on camera. Thankfully, he got his moment with the winning placard photo above!
Best Biomedical Science Day artwork
Jodie Marie Tait, Elizabeth Ellis, and Elena Stoner from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust teamed up with Georgia Underhill, Shahidah Safa and Courtney Bryan to create a rainbow collage using cut-outs from IBMS magazines.
