Dr. Shara Cohen awarded BEM

IBMS Fellow Dr. Shara Cohen is the founder and CEO of Mums in Science and Cancer Care Parcel. She was recognized in the New Year Honours List with a British Empire Medal for Dedication to Women in STEM and Cancer Patient Support.

She followed a conventional scientific career working as a research scientist and lecturer until 2000, when she left mainstream science to establish the Life Science Communications company Euroscicon Ltd.

Dr Cohen started Mums in Science in 2005 after noticing a gap in the support for mums in STEM. It is a community platform for people in STEM that provides support, information and tools to manage a career while navigating the challenges of life, including parenting.

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2013, Dr Cohen set up Cancer Care Parcel, which provides appropriate gifts for people with cancer.

Dr Cohen has been a Fellow of the IBMS since 2016 and was recognised with a BEM for voluntary services to women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to cancer patients and their families.
