IBMS members inspire future biomedical students
8 March 2017
Microbiology staff from Sandwell and Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust attended the Worcestershire Skills Show

IBMS members including Pav Jheeta, Janet Bradley, Janet Miles, Hema Mistry and Michelle Watson took part in Worcestershire’s largest careers event. The all-day event took place at Worcester Warriors Sixways Stadium and was set up to give young people the opportunity to meet with employers and try out some activities.

The team took a range of materials to support their stand at the show. These include Petri dishes and microscopes where students from local secondary schools are encouraged to try out and learn about microbiology.

Some of the staff commented on their experience:

"It's been great to share my many years of laboratory experience with the students."
"Their enthusiasm makes it all worthwhile!"
"We hope to inspire and encourage."
"It's been an experience talking about pathology!"
"This is a great platform to introduce students to the world fo science and how the IBMS can support them through their pathway."

Students are further engaged by the team showcasing their work and answering any questions. There are also goody bags and leaflets available for students to take home encouraging them to consider accredited biomedical science degrees.

Some of the comments from attendees at the stand include:

“I have come to the UK to go into a medical field and I want to help care for patients.”
“I love how pathogens grow and multiply.”
