Joanna Andrew's New Year Address 2025
Welcoming 2025: a New Year Message from IBMS President Joanna Andrew
Dear Members,
As we step into 2025, I want to take a moment to reflect on our achievements and share my excitement for what lies ahead. It has been a privilege to lead the IBMS during a year of growth, collaboration, and recognition for our incredible profession.
This year promises to be a landmark one, as 2025 marks an IBMS Congress year. Congress is the UK’s largest biomedical science event, and I cannot wait to see so many of you there in Birmingham this September. It’s an unparalleled opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate the vital work we do. With more speakers, workshops, and exhibitors than ever before, Congress 2025 will be a showcase of the innovation, skill, and dedication that defines our profession.
Reflecting on 2024, I am incredibly proud of how we have strengthened our workforce initiatives. Our work sharing the IBMS Long-Term Biomedical Scientist Workforce Plan is helping us to provide meaningful support for our members. From working on expanding advanced roles and digitising the specialist diplomas, to advocating for protected time and funding for training, we are building a future where biomedical scientists will thrive at every stage of their careers.
This year, I want to focus even more on ensuring every member feels valued and supported. Whether you’re just starting your career, seeking development opportunities, or considering your next steps, the IBMS is here for you. I am particularly passionate about empowering those in the middle and later stages of their careers, ensuring they have the resources, recognition, and opportunities they deserve.
Visibility remains at the heart of everything we do. Thanks to the collective efforts of our members, Council, and Executive Team, the profile of biomedical science has never been higher. This visibility matters — it attracts talent, inspires confidence in our profession, and ensures our voices are heard in shaping healthcare policy.
I want to thank each of you for the dedication you bring to your work every day. Biomedical science is not just a career; it’s a calling. I see that in every sample processed, every diagnosis made, and every trainee mentored. It is your passion and expertise that make our profession indispensable to healthcare.
Here’s to a year of learning, connection, and celebration. I look forward to seeing what we will achieve together in 2025.
Warmest wishes for the year ahead,
IBMS President Joanna Andrew
