Food-induced immunotherapy has been practiced with varying success for over 100 years. Over the past 10 - 15 years it has gained a greater recognition in the potential management of children with food allergies. Food-induced immunotherapy can take the form of oral, epicutaneous or sublingual routes and usually results in a short-lived desensitisation rather than the acquisition of tolerance. For this reason, food immunotherapy is not a cure but relies on regular, usually daily, ingestion. Peanut immunotherapy lies mainly within the domain of clinic research however Palforzia (roasted peanut flour), was approved by NICE in February 2022 for the management of peanut allergy in children 4 to 17 years of age. The methodologies and factors associated with successful desensitisation to peanut will be discussed.

Rapid antigen tests for malaria have been in routine use in UK haematology labs for many years now. However, interpretation of their results, especially in light of the accompanying blood film findings can still prove to be confusing.

The advantages and limitations of these tests will be explored and explained.

Shared training – the Scottish Training Academy to Registration Portfolio training

Despite major advances in investigating haematological abnormalities, the blood film can still be crucial in diagnosis and patient management. The first major role is the validation of an abnormal blood count and, when it is found to be invalid, finding an explanation for factitious results. Factitiously low platelet counts and factitiously high MCVs are well recognized examples.

When the count is found to be valid, an explanation might be revealed. A blood film may indicate a likely diagnosis within minutes; this can be of vital importance as in acute promyelocytic leukaemia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, Burkitt lymphoma and certain infections. Sometimes the blood film suggests an uncommon or rare condition the diagnosis of which is important but would otherwise be delayed or elusive.

This talk is designed to be a “get ready” session where we introduce the ePortfolio system and present a high-level overview of the extensive features that Onefile offers, whilst simultaneously streamlining administration and reducing repetition. This will form an essential training and familiarisation opportunity for both trainers and trainees.

Digital tools are revolutionising the way researchers, clinicians, and educators manage and showcase their qualifications and career milestones. The IBMS are excited to be part of that revolution by launching version 5 of our Registration Training Portfolio on Onefile, a leading ePortfolio platform. The transition to a digital-only solution hosted by Onefile will redefine how students, apprentices and laboratory-based staff complete this integral part of their journey to HCPC registration as biomedical scientists.

Onefile offers a multifaceted approach to collating, managing and auditing a portfolio of evidence; simultaneously providing a robust and efficient process for training officers and managers to support and supervise the journey of their trainees from enrolment, portfolio completion and finally to successful verification.

Rather than providing a demonstration of Onefile per se, this talk will allow delegates to see how the platform can be easily embedded into their existing training structure. We will suggest a delivery workflow so users can maximise the features and benefits of Onefile and we will outline a roadmap of user training, plus other support to facilitate the transition to Onefile in their laboratories and / or universities over the coming months.

This talk will be informative for anyone who is involved in or responsible for pre-registration laboratory training, in particular portfolio candidates, training officers, laboratory managers and university placement tutors.

Additional talks focusing on specific elements of Onefile are scheduled for the free seminar programme on Thursday. These talks will specifically consider Onefile from the perspective of trainees and trainers (11.00am, Hall: 4), and training officers/laboratory managers/portfolio verifiers (2.30pm, Hall: 4).

A robust approach to Registration Training Portfolio verification is crucial to maintaining the high standards of confidence in the reputation of HCPC-registered biomedical scientists. The transition to a digital-only Registration Training Portfolio using the ePortfolio platform Onefile will provide a more streamlined approach to portfolio verification allowing verifiers to focus on what matters most… the assessment of a trainee’s competence.

This talk (the last of three) will demonstrate how verifiers can use Onefile to verify the evidence provided by the trainee and approved by their training officer or manager, using a number of tools to track evidence against the HCPC Standards of Proficiency. Onefile’s ePortfolio allows verifiers to gain a holistic view of the trainee’s understanding, enabling verifiers to scaffold the discussion during the verification visit and laboratory tour. We will see how Onefile provides a comprehensive system to arrange the verification visit (either virtually or in person), complete the verification report, and manage the final sign-off of the verified portfolio. Onefile’s inbuilt audit trail minimises the administration associated with portfolio verification, and we will show how this can be used to help improve the quality of education and training in the workplace.

We suggest that this talk will be most informative to post-registration staff involved in overseeing training, such as training officers/managers and verifiers.
