Biomedical Science Society at the University of Worcester hosts biomedical scientist

Sophie McMillan from the Biomedical Science Society shared her experience after Joanne Motte - Advanced Practitioner in Histological Dissection, Biomedical Scientist & Clinical Scientist in Cellular Pathology – attended their meeting as a guest speaker:

“There were 16 attendees including members and non-members of the society, all either on the BSc hons Biomedical Science degree or Biological Sciences Foundation Degree. The course leader for the Biomedical Science degree also attended.
Jo talked us through the disciplines within the pathology laboratory and how you can progress your career on completion of the IBMS registration portfolio with the completion of specialised diploma portfolios, higher and advanced diplomas and what is involved with the completion of these. She also gave advice on getting a role following graduation, and steps that you can take to make yourself ‘stand out from the crowd’ when applying for roles, such as volunteering.
The IBMS kindly sent us promotional material and leaflets for attendees to take away that covered information on career development as well as pens, pencils, stickers, notepads and t-shirts. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to get information about where they can take their degree and what being a Biomedical Scientist really means!
We asked a few of our guests to share what they thought of the event. They said: ‘Captivating’
‘Really useful to find out what pathways are available once I finish my degree and registration portfolio, and even better to hear it from someone that has done it themselves’.
Jo hosted an amazing presentation for us on career pathways within biomedical science that was enjoyed by both member and non-members of the society.”
