Celebrating the next generation of researchers at STEM for Britain 2025

STEM for Britain returned to the Houses of Parliament this year, continuing its long-standing tradition of connecting early career researchers with policymakers. Since 1997, this event has given young scientists, engineers, and mathematicians the chance to share their research directly with Members of Parliament, encouraging a real dialogue between the people shaping policy and those driving scientific progress.

At its heart, STEM for Britain is about championing the next generation of researchers. It highlights new discoveries, celebrates the people behind them, and reminds us why investment in STEM is vital for the UK’s future. This year, researchers from across the country presented their work, showing how science can improve lives and support better decision-making in Parliament.

The IBMS was proud to once again sponsor the Gold and Silver Awards for Biological and Biomedical Sciences, recognising the outstanding contributions these young scientists are making to global health and innovation.

For Britain

Silver

This year’s winners in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences category included:

Gold – Anneliese Hodge, University of Plymouth
For her research on the ecotoxicological effects of UV filters from sunscreens on marine microalgae – work that could have major implications for environmental protection and public health.

SilverMagdalena Armas, The Francis Crick Institute
For her project exploring how PETRA technology can modulate gene expression in human T cells, offering new insights into immunotherapy and disease treatment.

BronzeHarry Jarrett, Ulster University
For his research into riboflavin deficiency as a critical but often overlooked global health issue affecting women and children worldwide.

These are just a few of the bright minds pushing boundaries and shaping the future of healthcare and science.

Speaking at the event, IBMS President Sarah Pitt congratulated addressed the audience:

"We are proud to sponsor the Gold and Silver Awards today, recognising the next generation of brilliant researchers whose work will lead to medical breakthroughs and improve lives."
"So, to all the finalists, congratulations. Your work represents the very best of biomedical science. We look forward to seeing how your research shapes the future of healthcare — and hopefully, some of you presenting at IBMS Congress this year!"

STEM for Britain continues to inspire, connect, and celebrate the UK’s emerging scientific talent. Congratulations to all of this year’s finalists and award winners. Your work is already making a difference.
