IBMS Fellow Dr Lucy Smyth shares her account of Salford University and the IBMS’ Biomedical Science Employer Event

Lucy said, “Salford University Biomedical Science programme team led a highly successful IBMS employer event to inform, educate and liaise with our external partners in NHS pathology labs.

The event was widely publicised via Eventbrite and the IBMS website, yielding a fantastic attendance of nearly all our existing collaborators, plus a wider audience.  Held in the bright lights of media city university building venue, the room was packed with delegates, university staff, IBMS materials and experts.

The day was in two halves, firstly an employer engagement event to inform NHS colleagues of programme changes and developments leading to the fruition of the BMS apprentice degree with now 24 students registered over the three levels. Secondly the ‘train the trainer’ CPD event for IBMS staff wishing to become registration portfolio assessors.

Kicking off the first session was our largest ever employer advisory group meeting including lively input from our lay members and a discussion on who are our service users and how they can input into the programme and motivating our students.  Practice-based learning briefings followed to ensure all apprentice students are fully supported by their employers in the NHS.

The ‘train the trainer’ sessions really showcased the quality of Salford University staff with lively discussions on learning styles and how to incorporate that into our provision of education, learning technologies, reflective writing and providing feedback.

The keynote speaker of the day was Jocelyn Pryce, IBMS Deputy Head of Education who delivered an informative portfolio building workshop to enable pathology lab staff to become IBMS portfolio verifiers.  We’ve received some great feedback from attendees who found the event useful and enjoyable. We look forward to building on this event to make biomedical science even bigger and better than ever before!  Thank you to all involved.”
