IBMS Manchester Branch: IBMS/RCPATH Northern Symposium

IBMS Manchester Branch: IBMS/RCPATH Northern Symposium
27 February 2024
The IBMS/RCPath Northern Symposium of October 2023 brought together professionals from all backgrounds and specialties to share learning relevant across our fields.

The event's main theme was 'Pathology and People'. It covered a variety of sessions, with the opening plenary ‘The Future of Pathology’ presented by IBMS Past President, Debra Padgett and President of RCPath, Mike Osborn.

As the IBMS EDI Lead Council Representative, Tahmina led the Diversity and Inclusion workshops on behalf of the IBMS, alongside Dr Heba Ali representing RCPath. The workshops focused on ‘Embracing Differences in Pathology’.

Tahmina discussed the launch of the IBMS EDI working group and the actions taken so far based on the benchmarking reports from 2017 and 2021.

Tahmina said: “ It was wonderful to see so many people in the room who are genuinely interested in developing strategies to address barriers to diversity in education and training and to improve career progression for underrepresented members.
This must be a collective effort where students, academics and professional colleagues work together in partnership to establish effective EDI working practices. For anyone interested in EDI, the IBMS EDI working group have a monthly EDI feature in the Biomedical Scientist magazine to support raising awareness of different backgrounds of individuals who work in Biomedical Science, Pathology and healthcare. This is also a good opportunity for CPD!”.
