World TB Day is held annually on 24 March to raise awareness of tuberculosis. This pulmonary disease kills almost 1.5 million people each year.
This event commemorates the day when Dr Robert Koch announced he had discovered the bacillus that caused tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. His discovery heralded a new path to diagnosing and treating this disease.
The theme for 2017 is ‘Unite to End TB’. This disease can affect anyone, and often goes misdiagnosed, despite it being preventable and treatable. Because this disease still exists, professional bodies and organisations around the world are uniting to educate and raise awareness of this public health issue.
