Northern Ireland laboratories shone at Ulster University’s Impact Excellence Awards

May 11th marked the evening of the inaugural Impact Excellence Awards ceremony, held to recognise organisations for their commitment to graduate research and employability.

Out of a 180 applications, 35 organisations were shortlisted, including laboratories from the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust (BHSCT) and the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust (SEHSCT) for the public sector category.

The Laboratories of the Belfast Trust received the award for Placement Employer in the Public Sector category and the Laboratories of the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust (SEHSCT) received a Highly Commended certificate.

Hospital Laboratories across Northern Ireland implement an annual 52 week placement programme for up to 25 Ulster University students taking the integrated degree programme in Biomedical Sciences with Diploma in Professional Practice (Pathology).

During placement the students complete the training portfolio for the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) Certificate of Competence. Upon successfully completing their degree programme, the students are then eligible to apply for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) professional registration and Biomedical Scientist positions.

Among the scientists accepting the award was IBMS Council member Sean Conlan, Immunology Discipline Manager and Laboratory Training Co-ordinator.

Sean commented, “This was a very special night for Biomedical Science in Northern Ireland with two hospital laboratories shortlisted in the public sector category with one receiving the placement employer award and the other highly commended.
I know that all the laboratories across Northern Ireland provide an invaluable placement year to the Ulster University students who are our future workforce.
This recognition is a testament to all the laboratory staff who are involved in the training & support of the students; to students past and present and has raised the profile of Biomedical Science within Northern Ireland.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in this high successful placement programme and training in the laboratories of the Belfast & South Eastern Health & Social Care trusts.
