In this special festive episode of IBMS pod, we were joined by Yan Tsou - Quality Control Scientist at the Francis Crick Institute and Great British Bakeoff star. Yan spoke to us about her work on cell lines in the Crick's cell services team, providing cells to researchers, banking cells and checking for contaminates such as Mycoplasma. She also discussed her biomedical research work on Latent Tuberculosis in London - having authored five scientific papers.

Later on, we heard all about Yan's journey on the Great British Bakeoff Series 8, including how science helped her create some signature bakes: 'Mango Salmon Roe Cake with Liquefied Agar Gel' and 'Banana Ramen'! We then challenged her to our special quiz: 'What's on your plate?' where Yan revealed what's on the menu for her Christmas lunch and how we can prevent some common Christmas culinary pitfalls.

In the Quick-fire round, we asked Yan about her favourite Christmas movie, boxing day tradition, and all-time favourite bakeoff dish.

Following this, a former biomedical scientist in Haematology and ordained Anglican priest in the church of Wales joined us for a special episode of LabLife. He explains how a senior role in the church aided him as a Biomedical Scientist before discussing his work overseas, helping to set up diagnostic laboratories across sub-Saharan Africa. He later recollected his experiences working in NHS laboratories over Christmas and told us about recently performing the marriage ceremony for his daughter Hannah, also a biomedical scientist in Haematology!
