This course is aimed at Biomedical Scientists preparing for their specialist portfolios and working in histopathology departments involved in the preparation of routine histological sections. The course may also be useful for support staff involved in section preparation and quality control. The course aims to teach recognition of a range of tissues and how knowing these can impact on patient quality. The afternoon session will aim to link what has been learned to consequences for the lab and patient management.

Two days scientific conference for participants enrolled in Weqas EQA programmes. Targeted learning consisting of EQA interpretation, clinical cases and topical scientific lectures.

The EM Spring School aims to provide a basic training in both the theory and practice of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The course covers imaging, diffraction and chemical microanalysis as well as the highly important area of sample preparation.

This Course utilises many different sample types and fluorescent probes (DNA stains, classic antibody labels and fluorescent proteins) and these are chosen to best demonstrate particular problems and techniques. Focus is on the techniques they enable and the problems they generate, which will be applicable to any sample types.

This course is designed for those studying for their specialist portfolio in haematology, but is suitable
as a refresher for those returning to the subject or an update for those already qualified.
Day one deals with the proper use and care of the microscope, staining and stain QC/ trouble
shooting and normal haematopoiesis. This day will contain a workshop on normal morphology.
Day two will discuss the pre-analytical variables that can affect the sample and result, disease
process and the associated morphological abnormalities and the clinical significance of the
generated report for the patient, be it negative or abnormal.
These two days can be taken together or individually as suits the learners needs.

The Light Microscopy summer school is an annual, residential two day course held at the University of York covering the principles of light microscopy. Participants are also trained in practical issues surrounding light microscopy. After introductory presentations, the course is taught predominantly through hands-on practical sessions.

The course runs over four half-days, plus one optional additional Clinical Module on the following Monday. The course is suitable for those who are relatively new to flow cytometry and who wish to expand their experience with applications and specific analysis.

Our first IBMS Support Hub of 2025 takes place on 22nd January. Featuring Zonya Jeffrey and Hetalika Banka, this session will focus on reflective writing skills for CPD and beyond.
