ASLM and IBMS announce African lab project
25 July 2016
The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the African Society of Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) are collaborating on providing education and professional development for biomedical science in Africa

The MOU sets out a pilot project based on a partnership approach, providing African laboratories with professional educational opportunities.  This pilot project is intended to support the development of sustainable management, systems and to establish a baseline which could:

  • Build a better skilled and more effective laboratory workforce at all levels
  • Make laboratory quality improvement and accreditation commonplace
  • Build performance, transparency and accountability, and the uptake of good practice
  • Reduce reliance on external assistance
  • Establish regional education benchmarks for laboratories
  • Provide vital development skills for technical laboratory managers to professionally manage laboratories.

Based on key qualifications and membership of a leading international professional association, this project is the first of its kind in African laboratories. The 18 month pilot project is predicted to go from strength to strength, creating new partnerships and a valuable collaboration of biomedical science professionals transcending geographic boundaries.

The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is a pan-African organisation based in Addis Ababa with the goal of improving healthcare in Africa through better laboratory medicine.
