Becoming a Chartered Scientist

Becoming a Chartered Scientist
26 January 2018
As the first new IBMS Chartered Scientist of 2018, IBMS member Helen Watson shares her journey to becoming chartered.

Helen is an Advanced Biomedical Scientist and is based at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

What interested you in becoming a Chartered Scientist?

I have been a member of the IBMS for a number of years and have benefited from both the CPD and educational opportunities they provide. My career has developed and I am now looking for the next step, the award of Chartered Scientist is a key stage in this. It provides evidence of professional growth and allows me to demonstrate a level of competency and accomplishment.

How does it feel to now be part of a wider community of professionally registered scientists in the UK and beyond?

It is very rewarding to be part of an organisation setting the standards for professional scientists. It’s an excellent opportunity to be part of a supportive network, to promote the valuable contribution we make to science and our commitment to quality.

How do you feel professional registration will help you plan your own personal development and goals?

I am opening it gives me a broader range of CPD possibilities and some useful networking opportunities, with a variety of sciences. To hold a recognised status such as CSci will help my CV stand out from the crowd, I might even try and recruit some of my colleagues now!

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to become a Chartered Scientist?

The Science Council website has some excellent advice but I would also say ask the people around you! It’s been great how many people are willing to help and have given me opportunities to get involved with projects, even just a small part. It’s been a nice way to integrate with other sections within our increasingly large department.

The IBMS wishes Helen congratulations on achieving Chartered status.
