First IBMS eStudent BSA Science Festival Bursary Report published
30 October 2014
The report of inaugural IBMS eStudent BSA Science Festival Bursary winner, Dee Kulaveerasingam, will be published in November's edition of The Biomedical Scientist

The bursary is awarded to an IBMS eStudent member, enabling then to attend the British Science Festival. The bursary offers IBMS eStudent members the chance to meet leading scientists and speakers, engage in discussions about the impact of science and to see excellent public engagement in action.

Dee, a PhD student at the Randall Division of Cell and Molecular Biophysics, King's College London, was delighted to learn that she was the first bursary recipient:

"These opportunities are fantastic and I am very grateful to the IBMS for awarding me this bursary. I hope to learn from expert scientific speakers on how to keep an audience engaged when discussing difficult topics. And I look forward to seeing what everyone thinks on how best to communicate science to the public!".

Dee's report describes a wide range of events, activities and speakers that offered inspiring examples of science communication in action:

"The BSA Science festival encompassed everything from robots to medicine and mathematics with chickens! Attending the BSA Science festival seemed like the best opportunity to see first hand how the public understand and interact with scientists. In addition I wanted to hear great speakers portray their scientific stories but also meet the people at the forefront of scientific communication. It was an eye opening experience from day one, not just from hearing the talks and asking interesting questions but meeting the public, students and speakers from all walks of life.".
