IBMS member wins National Pathology Week Prize

David, a Senior Biomedical Scientist and departmental Quality lead in Microbiology at Nobles Hospital was declared the winner of Pathology Portraits prize at a celebration to mark the opening of National Pathology Week hosted by the Royal College.

The Pathology Portraits prize was created to showcase the people who work in pathology, highlighting the range of work that pathologists and biomedical scientists do for the benefit of patients and animals. 

David's award winning portrait featured his colleague, Craig Pownall RSci MIBMS, a specialist biomedical scientist at Nobles. David's photograph (top left in collage) depicted his colleague Craig reading urine microscopy. Despite this being David's first attempt at portrait photography, he felt he had: "Captured a scientist in his element and I think it worked.". 

David was delighted to have been awarded the prize for best portrait: "I am very proud to have won the prize, it really was a surprise. I think it’s important that events like National Pathology Week are well supported and this was my way of doing that. Attending the National Pathology Week launch event showed me that we all face the same issues and really stressed the importance of communication with clinicians and patients. it was really quite inspiring.".

David and his colleagues at Nobles will be continue to bring the promoting the essential work of biomedical scientists and pathologists to public attention at a local careers fair this week.

David's winning entry, along with the rest of the Pathology Portraits competition entries, will be displayed at The Royal College of Pathologists during National Pathology Week and on this website. The winning entries will also be featured in the College’s journal, The Bulletin.
