Branch members receive 50 year medals and honorary membership

On Tuesday 26 September at the IBMS Congress in Birmingham, three IBMS members received awards presented by President Ian Sturdgess.

50 Year Medal

The 50 Year medal is awarded to members for continuous membership and dedication to the IBMS. Medals were awarded to members Geoff Trew and Graham Furber.

Geoff Trew joined the IBMS in 1966, becoming a Fellow in 1972. Until retirement in 2009, Geoff worked as a specialist in pathology in the biochemistry department at the Bronglais General Hospital in Aberystwyth.  In 2004, Geoff became a Chartered Scientist (CSci).

Graham Furber joined the IBMS in 1967 as a student member. He worked as a specialist in haematology and blood transfusion at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital until retirement in 2009. Graham became an IBMS Fellow in 1975 and remains a dedicated member to this day.

Honorary Membership

IBMS Honorary Membership is awarded to an individual who has shown an exceptional level of service to the IBMS at the branch or regional level. In honour of his excellent service to the IBMS, Honorary Membership was awarded to Ronald Templeton.

Ronald joined the IBMS in 1959 when the IBMS was still the Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology. For the Institute, he acted as a CPD officer and worked as a Senior Training Tutor and Lecturer at John Moores University in Liverpool, where his collaboration with Programme Leader Dr Janice Harland developed a 10 credit module called ‘Preparing for Work’ which combined with a one year placement, led to what is today known as the coterminous/integrated degree used by universities around the UK. He also was a founding member of the Institute’s Microbiology discussion group.

IBMS President Ian Sturdgess commented, “These members have demonstrated a passion for the field, skill and dedication to the Institute and to the profession. It is my pleasure to recognise their achievements today.”

The IBMS is delighted to formally honour the outstanding membership and professional commitment of these members to the field of biomedical science.
