Biomedical science team showcase activities at NEC Skills Show
31 January 2017
IBMS members volunteered at the NEC Skills Show in Birmingham.

In November 2016, the Skills Show took place at The NEC in Birmingham. This three day show allowed employers, educators and students to participate in activities promoting skills and careers in the sectors of engineering and technology, IT and enterprise, media and creative, construction and infrastructure as well as hospitality and lifestyle.

Parmi Perera shared the following about their experience:

“Our team leader Nicola Hodges, Helen Witham and I volunteered as exhibitors for NHS Health England and represented the Pathology Labs (Blood Sciences) in RUH Bath NHS Foundation Trust. We had a variety of activities organised for the three days which included a ‘Label your organs’ Body Poster, ‘Know your cells’ blood cell poster, Pipette Race and an interactive game based on the Body Poster. We also provided advice and explanation about what we do day-to-day in the labs and the role of a Biomedical Scientist in the wider healthcare setting.

We also provided advice to sixth Formers and GCSE students wanting to study Biomedical Science in University. We talked about the importance of HCPC and IBMS societies and the support they provide. We spoke to parents and kids of varying ages and background in the hope of inspiring more and more people to pursue a career in Biomedical Science.”
