Congress 2022 - IBMS Manchester Branch

Congress 2022 - IBMS Manchester Branch
2 March 2023
The long-overdue event showed how far the profession has come, writes IBMS Chief Executive David Wells.

Commenting further on Congress 2022, David Wells stated:

“IBMS Congress is always a spectacular event, the biggest and brightest in the biomedical science calendar, but this year it was particularly special. It felt long overdue – getting the whole profession together in a COVID secure way and really talking about where we’ve been and where we’re going. The plenary sessions gave a great overview of the work our biomedical science professions have been undertaking throughout the pandemic, what new educational routes are being established, and also what our strategies should be for dealing with a challenging future.”

The Manchester branch was well represented throughout Congress 2022. Michelle led the Congress 'Haematology Morphology' session with an online quiz (made live before the event started), that was attempted by an incredible number of more than 700 people. For those interested in Haematology Morphology and using this for CPD (or just for fun!), the quiz is available to all here. You can enter anonymously and compare how you do with Congress!

For the Education and Training program, Tahmina delivered a lecture on ‘Planning and delivering laboratory training’. This session was aimed at members looking to develop their skills and knowledge in the role of a training officer. The lecture covered a variety of topics, such as the skills required to be a good trainer, coaching and mentoring, performing training needs analysis, creating training programmes and dealing with poor performance.

Tahmina and Michelle also delivered lectures entitled ‘Top Tips for Trainees & Starting out in the Profession’ at the student congress, which was a huge success with the event fully booked weeks beforehand. Students were keen to hear about the several options offered via a career in a laboratory, and we received many questions about how to make the most out of placements.

“It was the first time I’ve presented to an audience of over 400 delegates, but it was fantastic to see how engaged the attendees were with the questions and discussions taking place”, said Tahmina.

Tahmina and Zonya were the poster judges for Education, Training and Laboratory Management. All the posters were excellent, and it was a really difficult task to select the best. The winner, Wendy Leversuch, was presented with a prize for the best poster focusing on an investigation into the use of online training videos to support laboratory bench training.
