IBMS President issues response to NHS England's "The Five Year Forward View"
24 October 2014
IBMS President, Nick Kirk CSci FIBMS has issued an initial response to NHS England’s recently published The Five Year Forward View

“The Institute of Biomedical Science welcomes the publication of NHS England’s vision for meeting the challenges facing the NHS in England in The Five Year Forward View. The recognition that closing the funding gap is essential to the future provision of high quality, safe services by the NHS in England is most encouraging.

Enabling change whilst maintaining patient safety and effectiveness of care is a core responsibility of all healthcare professionals and the members of the Institute will play a pivotal role in ensuring that this ethos is at the forefront of any future change in how health services are provided. The Institute’s Council will consider the proposals outlined in the document and how these might be taken forward by the profession over the coming weeks”.

The Five Year Forward View sets outs a clear direction for the way NHS services in England need to change and improve in order to close the predicted £30 billion NHS funding gap by 2020/21, and secure a high quality health service for England.

The document has been co-produced by leading NHS groups including Monitor, Health Education England, the NHS Trust Development Authority, Public Health England, the Care Quality Commission and NHS England in partnership with patient groups, clinicians and independent experts.

The Five Year Forward View outlines the actions needed to develop and deliver the new models of care, local flexibility and more investment in our workforce, technology and innovation, as well as actions on balancing demand, efficiency and funding.
