An insight into biomedical science careers

An insight into biomedical science careers
12 December 2019
IBMS members Zoe Midgley and Henna Bootwala promote biomedical science careers at the Healthcare and Blue Light Recruitment and Engagement Event

Zoe gave an account of their day:

“The event was a careers event for year 11 and 6th form students to gain an insight into a career in the emergency services and health care.

Microbiology was the only biomedical science discipline to be represented, however we did give them an insight into the other disciplines as well as our own! We had a stall where we spoke to the students, handed out information on a career in biomedical science and showed them some practical elements such as pictures we had taken on the iPad from the microscope.

We also had the option to give a presentation-- our 20-minute presentation to students gave them an insight into what biomedical science is, our role in health care, an overview of microbiology and career prospects plus the future role of biomedical scientists.

We tried to give educational advice on the different route into biomedical science to students and teachers particularly within our knowledge of what is available in our local area (We have two universities and a college that offer biomedical science, healthcare science and BTEC qualifications).

Attendees were particularly interested to know what biomedical science was about. One school had a teacher that was particularly interested in biomedical science, so her students already had an idea and were interested in learning about our work within the laboratory.

We hope by taking part we encouraged more people to consider a career in Biomedical Science.

We both enjoyed meeting and engaging with people outside the laboratory, speaking to them about our role within healthcare.”
