Congratulations to the six IBMS members featuring on the Advancing Healthcare Awards’ shortlist for 2023.

The IBMS is once again proudly sponsoring the Advancing Healthcare Award for Biomedical Scientist of the Year 2023. The category celebrates an exceptional biomedical scientist who has led the way for others in the field, using their skills and expertise to make an impactful change to patients’ lives.

Over the past 16 years, the Advancing Healthcare Awards (AHA's) recognise and celebrate the work of allied health professionals, healthcare scientists and those who work alongside them in support roles, leading innovative healthcare practice across the UK.

After receiving a record number of entries, the AHAs announced the shortlist, which includes six IBMS members:

Biomedical Scientist of The Year Award sponsored by the IBMS
  • Ian Davies, Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science and Healthcare Science Course Leader - Fellow
The Synnovis Award for Innovation in Healthcare Science

Innovation to Point of Care Testing in the Community, Milton Keynes University Hosptial & BLMK Integrated Care Board (Digital Team)

  • Rakhee Surti, Point of Care Project Manager - Licentiate 

  • Jess Dixon, Deputy PSM & Quality Manager – Member 

  • Jill Beech, Organisational Lead Healthcare Scientific Officer – Fellow

Biomedical, Academic and Chartered Scientist, The Renal Patient Support Group (RPSG)

  • Shahid Muhammad – Fellow 
Rising Star Award sponsored by Chamberlain Dunn
  • Carl Onwochei, Biomedical Scientist, Public Health Wales – Licentiate 

The shortlisted candidates will attend a judging panels between 27 February & 6 March 2023 and the winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on 21 April 2023.

We congratulate all the shortlisted nominees, and are delighted to see so many of our members recognised. 

Previous winners: Biomedical Scientist of the Year

Last year, Bamidele Farinre, Scientific Advisor at the UKHSA (Lab Validation and Quality Assurance), for her excellent contributions to nationwide pandemic efforts. In particular, her idea to set up a mobile-based testing system for COVID-19 was commended by the judging panel

In 2021 the award was presented to IBMS member Dr Sarah Pitt for her role in sharing fact-checked, professional and scientific information about COVID-19 on behalf of IBMS members and the biomedical science profession throughout the pandemic.

In 2020 the award was presented to IBMS member Dr Guy Orchard for his innovative work and contributions to patient care.

In 2019 the award was presented to IBMS member Dr Jo Horne for pushing the boundaries of the profession.

In 2018 the award was presented to IBMS member Malcolm Robinson for his Harvey's Gang charity project.
